Located within SkyParc @ Dawson, this 980 sq ft apartment presented a unique opportunity to reinterpret Peranakan living for contemporary life. The homeowners wanted a residence that would honour and celebrate their cultural heritage while providing the comfort, functionality, and practicality required for modern urban living.
Our design approach focused on creating a home that feels deeply rooted in tradition while embracing the needs of a contemporary lifestyle. By carefully balancing cultural identity with modern functionality, we transformed the apartment into a bright, breathable, and meaningful living environment.
The resulting space enhances natural daylight and ventilation while introducing thoughtful design elements that celebrate Peranakan culture. Rather than replicating tradition, the design distills its essence, creating a refined and modern interpretation that remains connected to its roots.
Preserving Cultural Identity Through Design
One of the key challenges of this project was maintaining the richness and character of Peranakan heritage within a compact urban apartment. Traditional Peranakan homes are often celebrated for their intricate detailing, vibrant colours, and generous spatial qualities. However, these characteristics can sometimes be lost when translated into smaller contemporary residences.
To address this, we identified the cultural elements that carry the strongest emotional and visual significance. Features such as rattan screens, heirloom-inspired display niches, and carefully interpreted decorative details were incorporated throughout the home. These design interventions serve as subtle references to Peranakan architecture and craftsmanship while remaining relevant to a modern lifestyle.
Beyond aesthetics, the redesign also improved spatial connectivity, natural lighting, and airflow, creating a more comfortable and enjoyable environment for daily living.
Most importantly, the home was designed to support the emotional connection between the homeowners and their heritage. It offers a space where cultural memories can be preserved and celebrated without compromising contemporary comfort or functionality.
A Practical Approach to Sustainable Living
Sustainability was another important consideration throughout the design process. Rather than pursuing sustainability through complex technological solutions, we adopted a practical and long-term approach centred on durability, adaptability, and responsible material choices.
The layout was carefully planned to maximise natural daylight and cross-ventilation, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical cooling. This not only lowers energy consumption but also enhances the overall living experience by creating healthier and more comfortable indoor spaces.
We also prioritised the use of durable materials and timeless design principles. By creating a home that can adapt to changing needs over time, we reduce the likelihood of future renovations and unnecessary material waste.
Public spaces within the home were designed to encourage interaction and connection, reinforcing the social and cultural values that are central to Peranakan living. Through thoughtful planning and sustainable design strategies, the apartment promotes resilience, longevity, and a more mindful way of living.
